"Agricultural aid isn't just a handout, it's a hand-up, providing the resources and tools for people to grow their own food and lift themselves out of poverty."

Bono

Hayk for Our Heroes has completed a number of agricultural aide projects to bring sustainable food sources to those in the remote regions of Armenia who need it most.

Bardzravan Beehive Project

In collaboration with United Nations Development Programme [UNDP], Hayk for our Heroes [HFOH] is thrilled to launch the Bardzravan Beehive Project. This initiative will create jobs, generate resources, and bring much-needed stability to the beautiful village of Bardzravan in Syunik Province.

Project Overview

Bardzravan, home to 50 families, lies approximately a mile from the border of Azerbaijan [Occupied Artsakh]. After the 2020 war, the village lost vital agricultural connections, making it hard for residents to sustain their livelihoods.

With a project goal of $17,400, we aim to empower the 50 families of Bardzravan village and help pave the way for a prosperous future!

Sotk Sheep Project:

Empowering Local Families in Vardenis

The Sotk Sheep Project, organized and sponsored by the non-profit organization Hayk for Our Heroes, has successfully raised $4,500 to empower and uplift families in the village of Sotk, located in the Vardenis region. This project aims to foster sustainable livelihoods by providing selected families with livestock, specifically healthy, adult sheep.

Project Overview

Ten carefully chosen families in Sotk will each receive three adult sheep ready to mate. The strategic selection of adult sheep ensures rapid reproduction, with each family's initial flock expected to grow to nine or more within a few months. This multiplication of livestock will significantly increase the benefits over time, creating a ripple effect of prosperity throughout the village.

Benefits of Sheep

Sheep are incredibly valuable assets for several reasons:

  1. Wool Production: Families can utilize the wool produced by the sheep to make clothing or sell it, providing an additional source of income.

  2. Milk Production: Sheep milk is a nutritious resource that can be consumed directly or processed into cheese, further enhancing the family's food resources and potential income.

Sustainable Livelihoods

The Sotk Sheep Project is designed to provide more than just immediate resources. It aims to foster a sense of purpose and a sustainable livelihood for the participating families. By engaging in sheep care, wool processing, and cheese making, the project will stimulate local employment and potentially create new job opportunities within the community.

Responsibilities and Accountability

To ensure the success and sustainability of the project, participating families must sign an agreement to take proper care of the sheep. The agreement includes the following stipulations:

  • Families must ensure the health and well-being of the sheep.

  • Killing the sheep or neglecting their care will result in penalties, including a fee equal to the value of the sheep, payable to the mayor.

  • If a family fails to fulfill their responsibilities, the sheep will be reassigned to another family.

This framework of accountability ensures the continuity of the project and the fair distribution of this valuable resource.

Conclusion

The Sotk Sheep Project, sponsored by Hayk for Our Heroes, stands as a beacon of sustainable development, demonstrating how targeted initiatives can empower local communities and create lasting change. By providing families with livestock, the project not only enhances their immediate resources but also fosters a sustainable livelihood and a brighter future for the village of Sotk. With the successful raising of $4,500, this initiative is set to bring significant positive impact, proving that small investments can yield substantial returns in community development.

Empowering Communities: The Goris Agricultural Project

The Goris region, nestled in the heart of Armenia, has long been known for its agricultural heritage. However, in recent years, the local communities have faced significant challenges due to the declining performance of their traditional potato seeds. Recognizing the need for a sustainable solution, Hayk for our Heroes, a dedicated organization committed to supporting Armenian communities, launched the Goris Agricultural Project.

A Seed of Hope

The Goris Agricultural Project, organized and sponsored by Hayk for our Heroes, has raised $8,000 with the ambitious goal of revitalizing the region's agricultural productivity. The project focuses on providing 25 tons of "Estrella" German blue flower potato seeds to families across the Goris region. These seeds, renowned for their resilience and high yield, promise a new era of prosperity for the local farmers.

Reaching the Hearts of the Community

The distribution of the "Estrella" seeds has been meticulously planned to ensure maximum impact. The project targets 749 families across three key villages:

  • Verishen: 448 families

  • Hartashen: 144 families

  • Khndzoresk: 157 families

Each family received a portion of the seeds, enabling them to cultivate their lands with confidence and hope for a better harvest season.

Transformative Impact

The introduction of the "Estrella" potato seeds has had a profound impact on the communities in Goris. For years, farmers struggled with diminishing yields from their traditional seeds, which were increasingly vulnerable to pests and changing climate conditions. The new seeds, however, have shown remarkable resilience, leading to healthier crops and more bountiful harvests.

Families in Verishen, Hartashen, and Khndzoresk have reported significant improvements in their potato yields, translating to increased food security and economic stability. The project has not only boosted agricultural productivity but also instilled a renewed sense of optimism among the farmers. With a reliable source of income, many families can now invest in better farming equipment and techniques, further enhancing their livelihoods.

A Brighter Future

The success of the Goris Agricultural Project underscores the importance of community-driven initiatives and the power of collective effort. Hayk for our Heroes has demonstrated that with targeted support and innovative solutions, even the most pressing challenges can be overcome. The $8,000 raised for this project is more than just a financial contribution; it represents a commitment to the well-being and prosperity of the Goris region.

As the fields of Goris flourish with the vibrant blooms of the "Estrella" potato plants, the community stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of resilience and cooperation. The Goris Agricultural Project is a shining example of how dedicated efforts can transform lives and build a brighter, more sustainable future for generations to come.
